For Fast Deployments Inside a Wider Cloud Infrastructure, Testing Purposes or the Sysadmin Home Servers.
– Learn which way a startup or larger company could have a small-medium testing deployment before investing large amount of money or resources.
– Learn how a sysadmin could deploy a “”home-made”” cloud for curiosity or hosting his/her own servers.
– Learn how to import/export VM’s from and into VMWare vCloud, VMWare Workstation and OpenNebula using desktop applications (generate OVF for example).
Author Biography
Actually I’m a system administrator at AGESIC (Uruguay’s IT government agency) where I’m using OpenNebula. Please read my user experience, it will take about seven minutes.
I migrate to Uruguay from spain, I finished studying F.P. and couldn’t find job as for the crysis and lack of experience on IT, so I migrate to where IT people was needed hoping to find opportunities (specially working with GNU/Linux). I started working in IT support on AGESIC and changed to system administration (that wasn’t being done before in the agency) as consequence of own merits I showed, currently more people are being added to my section. In AGESIC we are using VMWare infrastructure for virtualization, I’m the administrator of two organizations and the operative systems inside.
Here the cloud administration is outsourced.
Last june we had an incident so almost all the non-production VM’s got shutted down. Then I was asked to deploy new VM’s on desktop PC’s, there I think that was my opportunity for learning about virtualization seriously, I did a little research and liked OpenNebula, then I deploy a mini-cloud using those PC’s, that was a success and it’s being used as a fast-VM administration bay. For example, when one of our clients (ministries more often) want’s a copy of their servers, whom are usually hosted on farms with many others, I deploy a template within I load their application and B.D., test everything is OK and hand over to our client. Having that mini-cloud is very useful, because, for example, the VM’s will run on a “”typical office”” network with DHCP different from the cloud IP assignation, and as we are outsourced on the main cloud, new VM’s that require any new configuration or resource allocation would lend to open tickets and wait.
I’m also documenting in a blog what I’ve done both in english and spanish. Down below is the URL. I think that is an interesting user experience I could share and I would like to assist to the conference too. I’m returning to spain in about a month and half so I could attend to the conference just taking a train.
Greetings and thank you for reading!
