Where OpenNebula is typically used by system administrators to manage a data centers, SURFsara offers the OpenNebula interface directly to end users. SURFsara’s end users are researchers with diverse needs, and as such, offering custom solutions to all end users is impossible. Although we were hesitant at first, we gave researchers full control over their virtual infrstructure. It turns out that many researchers find the OpenNebula interface easy enough to use, enabling them to build complex compute infrastructures for their analysis workflows. This presentation discusses the features our researchers in the OpenNebula appreciate, and we discuss a selection of succesful projects.
